NATRE is the subject teacher association for all who teach RE in England. It is run by an elected executive committee made up of a majority of serving teachers, primary, secondary and special. NATRE seeks to be active in promoting good RE, working with government agencies such as the DCSF, QCA, Ofsted, TDA and Becta. NATRE publishes resources, offers professional development opportunities, delivers day courses and conferences, provides a forum for teachers of RE and takes an active interest in RE research.

Recent, current and planned projects include:

  • More than 130 NATRE-linked network groups for teachers of RE
  • Membership of the CfSA
  • Website providing access to a range of resources, many freely downloadable
  • Curriculum bursaries to support innovation in RE
  • Termly mailing of curriculum support materials and REtoday magazine
  • Delivery of support for the secondary curriculum on behalf of the DCSF, with RE Today
  • Consultation role with broadcasters e.g. BBC, Channel 4, Teachers TV
  • Links with other organisations e.g. RE Council, Inter Faith Network for the UK, RE Today, European Forum for Teachers of RE
  • REsource, NATRE's termly journal, provides professional reflection on the theory and practice of RE
  • RE for All 16-19: Provision of day courses for up to 100 students at a time
  • Spirited Arts: a project to enable RE to use strategies for the arts for spiritual learning - this includes the opportunity to enter a competition for work done following the set themes for any year - see www.natre.org.uk/spiritedarts/
  • A moderated online database of pupils’ reflections on religious and spiritual questions - see www.natre.org.uk/db/
