The Federation started life as The National Consultation of RE Centres which was established in 1973 with nine centres and the CEM (Christian Education Movement). There was an annual conference of the Consultation up until 1983. In July 1983 the Federation of National and Regional RE Centres was formed and the Consultation ceased to exist. Peter Wetz and Paul Turton called a meeting of RE Centres in the South and 18 members formed the initial regional group and the Federation has existed ever since as an informal body linking RE Centres nationally. Over the years, with the many changes in the format of national and local centres, it has been difficult to maintain contact between centres, but currently efforts are being made to bring as many centres together as possible.
