REC Newsletter January 2013

Looking ahead to the challenges of 2013 it seems that we in the RE community have a lot of work on our hands if we are to safeguard the future of religious education for our young people. How heartening, then, to know that the REC has 64 member organisations and many more supporters, who, with all their diverse beliefs and worldviews, are pulling together to achieve the same goal. This is always apparent at our Council meetings and Board meetings, which are invariably full of lively, passionate and fascinating discussions. Our member organisations and supporters don’t just “talk the talk”, however –  they take action, getting involved in campaigns, spreading the message about the importance of RE, and “walking the walk”, quite literally this year, as we plan sponsored walks to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the REC and raise vital funds (see news item below). We hope you’ll join us and help make our celebrations  a visible part of community life this spring.

To whom it may concern,

I am co-chair of the Council of Europe's committee concerned witht he dissemination of the Council of Europe's Recommendation on teaching about religions and beliefs, issued by the Committee of Ministers (the Foreign Ministers of all 47 member states including the UK) in December 2008.

Summary of Board Proceedings: 6th December 2012

On 6th December the Board of the RE Council met for the first time in its new location to discuss matters relating to the running of the organisation. The RE Council has agreed to make a summary of the meetings available, to make it easier for all member bodies to feel well informed about work carried out in between Full Council meetings.

REC Sponsored Walk Newsletter

In 2013, the RE Council will be 40 years old.

The anniversary will be marked by a series of sponsored walks, and similar events, across England and Wales to raise both the RE Council's profile, and some much needed income to enable us to carry on championing the cause of RE.

The monthly newsletter gives details of different ways in which people can contribute. Please do so if you can. Click the links below to see previous issues of the Sponsored Walk Newsletter

Qualifications Reform

This paper tries to bring together what is happening in qualifications reform  in England,  and to tease out the implications for  Religious Education (RE) and for  Religious Studies (RS). Whilst the paper has had the benefit of input from members of the Curriculum, Assessment and Qualifications Committee of the RE Council, the paper has not yet been discussed by the Committee or the Board. Its status, therefore, is that of a personal perspective from the Chair, and does not represent a considered RE Council position.
