Open for Tender: writing and design of a leaflet on RE

The REC wishes to commission the writing and design of a leaflet for general distribution which aims to promote the value of RE as a school subject.  There is a good deal of public misapprehension about the nature and purpose of RE, yet when it is well taught it is a subject which young people enjoy and feel is very worthwhile.  The REC is aware that many people who speak about RE in the media, political contexts, and even sometimes in educational and faith community circles are not always fully aware of the purpose and value of RE.  The REC's aim is therefore to produce something accessible, interesting, vibrant and professional, which will clarify what RE is about.

See the basic information about the work below.  If you would like to discuss this further and receive the supporting background material, please email

The brief: design of a full colour, two-fold two-sided A4 leaflet

The aim: to promote a better understanding of the nature and value of religious education in schools

The target audience: adults outside the ‘professional RE’ circuit, particularly but not exclusively headteachers, teachers of subjects other than RE, parents, school governors, school improvement officers and partners, representatives of faith communities,  journalists and politicians.

The language: should be positive and upbeat and avoid professional jargon and a bureaucratic tone

The illustrations: should include pictures of children/young people of children/young people (and teachers cf the TDA latest campaign to include teachers in pictures and not have just pupils as in their previous campaign) and quotations of their views on RE (quotes to be supplied separately by us).  and quotations of their views on RE (quotes to be supplied separately by us).  Pictures should include a variety of RE activities are taking place, not just writing in books.

The key messages:

  • RE makes a dynamic and positive contribution to young people’s education
  • RE promotes the spiritual and moral development of all whilst respecting the personal and family belief backgrounds of pupils
  • In contemporary society it is relevant to young people of all religious and non-religious beliefs
  • It enables young people to address their personal concerns and interests by giving them a voice
  • It helps to develop generic skills such as critical thinking, the ability to analyse and synthesise, to communicate their own views and consider respectfully those of others
  • It is broad in its content, embracing many different religious and non-religious beliefs, values and opinions in the modern world, thus contributing to understanding of local and wider society and community
  • It respects and embraces diversity, challenges stereotyping and prejudice and promotes equality and cohesion

Some key words to inform the character of the leaflet:

Contemporary - dynamic – educational – vibrant – diverse – popular – challenging – interactive – professional – young – trend setting – thought provoking – relevant – personal – reflective – creative – dialogical
